Dual/Concurrent Enrollment FAQs

Dual and concurrent enrollment allows high school students to get a head start on earning college credits. Read on to learn about these types of enrollment, how they differ and how to get started. The best part is that these programs are often free or low-cost!

  • Concurrent enrollment is when high school students register in DVC classes independently (not as part of a CCAP dual enrollment program, see below.) Concurrent enrollment is available to any high school student from any high school or high school district with approval from their high school, including homeschooled students. Learn more about concurrent enrollment for high school students and how to register.

At DVC, dual enrollment refers specifically to College and Career Access Pathway (CCAP) programs. CCAP programs are restricted to students from specific high school districts and specific classes. Please meet with your high school counselor to see what dual enrollment opportunities are available to you. Learn more about DVC’s CCAP dual enrollment opportunities.

  • No. Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the only person who is allowed to access college records or make changes to a college account is the student, regardless of age. As a high school student attending college, your privacy of your educational records is protected. We will not release student information to parents without the prior written consent of the student. Learn more about student privacy rights.

  • Tuition is waived for high school students participating in concurrent or dual enrollment at DVC; however, concurrent enrollment students will be expected to pay the Student Union and Student Representation fees and purchase or rent any textbooks required for classes. Students in CCAP dual enrollment programs should not be charged any fees.

Please check the Payment tile on Insite to view any charges on your account. If you see fees that are significantly higher than expected, you may need to complete the California Residency Reclassification process in order to reclassify as a California resident for tuition purposes. Please visit this page for more information about residency requirements and SB150: Residency

  • Concurrently enrolled high school students can take up to 11 units per semester. Students participating in CCAP Dual Enrollment programs can take up to 15 units of CCAP coursework per semester.

  • Please meet with your high school counselor to determine which DVC course aligns best with your goals. DVC counselors do not meet with concurrently enrolled high school students.

CCAP Dual Enrollment programs offer limited course selections. Please meet with your high school counselor to see what dual enrollment opportunities are available to you.

  • Classes taken through concurrent or dual enrollment will be included on the student’s permanent DVC college transcript. Please review the following page for more information about how to order official transcripts: Transcripts and Verifications

It is up to your high school if concurrent enrollment classes will appear on your high school transcript. Please meet with your high school counselor to determine if your DVC classes will be used on your high school transcript or not and what the process is for submitting official transcripts.

CCAP Dual Enrollment classes will appear on both your college and high school transcript. Grades for these classes will be shared with your high school district at the end of each semester under the CCAP Agreement.

  • High school students with disabilities may be eligible for DVC’s Disability Support Services (DSS) program. The DSS program offers a range of support services and adaptive technology. Services include tutoring, note taking services, equipment and software assistance, and alternate media services for textbooks and classroom materials. Visit the DSS page to learn more about how to get set up with these services.

  • Homeschool students are welcome to register for DVC classes through concurrent enrollment. Please complete the Special Admissions process and choose “Homeschool” for your high school. This will allow you to submit your Private School Affidavit with your Special Admissions Form. DVC must have a current Private School Affidavit on file for homeschooled students to register in classes. Homeschooled students will only need a parent signature on the Special Admissions Form (it will not be forwarded to a principal/designee for high school approval.)

Please note: DVC does not use homeschool transcripts to clear prerequisites.

  • DVC is committed to providing education for all students, regardless of immigration status. Undocumented high school students may enroll as concurrent or dual enrollment students. Undocumented students will be classified as nonresidents for tuition purposes; however, most undocumented high school students can waive the nonresident fees under the SB150 waiver of non-resident tuition while still in high school.
