Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Grid

The DVC Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Grid enables you to check to make sure you are completing the number of units you need to maintain your financial aid eligibility.

To maintain your eligibility for financial aid, you'll need to complete at least 67% of the units you attempt to meet the satisfactory academic progress requirement. To assist you in understanding how many units you'll need to earn to maintain satisfactory academic progress, we have provided a grid for you below.

Notes for viewing the grid:

  • Calculations are always rounded up to the nearest 0.5 unit. For example, 12 units x 67% = 8.04, so it is rounded up to 8.5.
  • The left column states the number of units you are attempting, after the deadline to drop classes has passed.
  • The right column states the number of units you must complete with a 2.0 or above GPA.
  • Note that grades of “W”, “I”, “NP”, and “F” are considered as units that were not completed.
  • To find out more about how the grid works in specific student situations, scroll down past the grid to view some examples.

Using the Grid - Examples of Student Situations

  • Richard begins the semester by attempting 13 units, so he must successfully complete 9 units or more.

Later on in the semester, he decides to add a 3-unit late-start class. Because his number of attempted units has increased, he is now attempting16 units, meaning that he must now successfully complete 11 units or more to ensure he is making satisfactory academic progress.

  • Jamie begins the semester by attempting 12 units, so she must successfully complete 8.5 units or more.

She then decides to drop a 3-unit class with a “W” grade, which brings her down to 9 units attempted. She is still making satisfactory academic progress because she is above the 8.5 unit requirement.  As long as Jamie does not drop any more classes and passes her remaining classes with a 2.0 or above GPA, she will retain good standing, and will make satisfactory academic progress.

  • Lisa begins the semester by attempting 9 units, so she must successfully complete 6.5 units or more.

She then decides to drop a 3-unit class with a “W” grade, which brings her down to 6 units attempted. This would result in her being placed on Probation or Suspension for not completing 67% or more of her attempted units no matter what her final GPA is. This is because she is considered to not be making satisfactory academic progress.
