After nearly two decades in the IT industry, Kelly Anderson decided to transition into the fitness industry, a field she had long been passionate about.
Despite her desire to make the switch earlier, her responsibilities as a single mother necessitated a steady income. But during the pandemic Kelly recognized a unique opportunity to pursue her fitness aspirations while maintaining her job stability.
"Working from home allowed me the ability to take classes and work full time. Since most classes were offered online during the pandemic, it was perfect timing. I knew that now was the time, and I had to make it work."
While online classes offered convenience and flexibility, Kelly did occasionally encounter challenges juggling her full-time work schedule with the need to attend in-person training sessions either at DVC's fitness center or in class as part of her pursuit of a personal training certificate.
“The main obstacle I faced during my program was with time; it was sometimes a struggle to find time away from work, especially during in-person requirements. This often meant hurried trips to campus and back.”
However, Kelly's determination and dedication to her studies and new career aspirations drove her onward. She even began working within the fitness industry before completing her program at DVC and passed the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) exam, a nationally accredited fitness training certification.
“I took the NASM exam before I completed my DVC program, as I wanted to start working. Since then, I have passed my senior fitness, women's fitness, group fitness, corrective exercise, and nutrition coach certifications.”
Kelly also attributes her readiness for her new career to the quality of DVC's personal training program, with special regard for the instructors, like Shelly Pierson, professor of kinesiology.
“Shelly was AMAZING! She encouraged me and was readily available for discussions when I needed guidance.” Professor Pierson even facilitated connections with employers for Kelly, ultimately assisting her in securing her first job as a trainer.
Kelly completed her program in 2023 and is off and running in her new fitness profession. "Right now, I am working in the fitness industry at the Bliss Fitness and Health in Oakland. I do personal training and coach group classes. I work with all kinds of individuals from seniors to recreational athletes. I enjoy all my clients! I have met so many amazing people and feel very fortunate they trust me with their fitness goals. I’m very happy with my new career!”
