Michael Chisar

Manager, Sports Medicine Program; Program Lead, Athletic Training & Coaching

Mike Chisar is the Sports Medicine Program Manager at Diablo Valley College and is responsible for overseeing the athletic training staff and all aspects of the athletic department’s health and wellness initiatives for student athletes. Mike is an athletic trainer and physical therapist and during his career has worked with athletes ranging from high school and club to college, professional and Olympic sports. 

He earned his undergraduate degree in athletic training from Cal State Fullerton and his Master’s in Physical Therapy degree from Hahnemann (now Drexel) University. Mike has held numerus roles on the DVC campus over the last 30 years including being the Head Athletic Trainer, an assistant professor and the creator/program lead for our academic sports medicine/athletic trainer program. During his tenure over 50 students have gone on to become certified athletic trainers and even more to careers other healthcare professions. He also served the college and his colleagues for five years as the college’s Curriculum Committee Chair, and more recently as the Co-Department Chair of Kinesiology and for Chair of the Work Experience Department. 

Mike has been equally involved in state and national associations including as chair of the National, District and California athletic training governmental affairs committees where he was heavily involved in the passage of a number of bills related to athlete safety. He is also a past president of the California Community College Athletic Trainers’ Association and a member of the FACCC-PAC. He continues to support our students, athletes, colleagues and the campus in his new role as the Sports Medicine Program Manager. In his spare time he enjoys travelling, spending time with his family and friends and attending punk rock concerts.
