Tembo* benefits

Self-Mastery
Self-mastery, or self-knowledge, is exemplified by the Kamitic principle Amen—the conscious ability to maintain equanimity in the face of the greatest of difficulties. With Tembo, you will cultivate these skills as you become a leader of self and others.

Collectivism
Rooted in the principle of Ujima—collective work and responsibility—Tembo brings men together to facilitate academic success and professional networking with community leaders and DVC faculty and staff.

Financial Literacy
Through Tembo, men are provided with the tools to achieve financial liberation and abundance. Tembo utilizes the principle of Ujamaa—cooperative economics—in providing men with the skills to be leaders in personal finance and business.

Manifesting
You are more than a student; you are a man and a valued member of your community. Tembo supports your whole being—emotional, physical, spiritual, and mental—and requires that you lead by expanding that which serves you by sharing Tembo with other African American peers and taking your skills into the world.

*Tembo is a Swahili word that means elephant. African elephants are keystone species, meaning they play a critical role in their ecosystem. Also known as “ecosystem engineers,” elephants shape their habitat in many ways.
