New Art Complex

New construction – Pleasant Hill

The Art Building on the Pleasant Hill campus has been slated for renovation for a very long time. Over the years, the Art Program has outgrown its space and is now spread out over multiple locations on campus. This new complex will bring all DVC art programs back under one roof. The identified location is in the northeast corner of campus between the Performing Arts Center (PAC) and Kinesiology buildings.

DVC new Art complex The new two-story complex will house all of the art programs including: photography, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture (jewelry/woodworking), painting and drawing, art-digital media (moving from BFL), art history, and film, television and electronic media (formerly BCA).

Construction timelines and updates:

UPDATE: October 21, 2020

This new student-centered complex will bring all DVC art programs back together under one roof in the northeast corner of campus between the Performing Arts Center (PAC) and the Athletics and Kinesiology buildings.

This project was combined with the PE/K project when it went out for bid amid the Covid-19 pandemic onset in April. The project successfully broke ground in July. The old digester pit discovered on the new Art Complex site has now been removed and the excavation at the site is now complete.

The extent of the underground conditions created a slower start, but the next phase is now underway. This includes installation of the building pad and site utilities in preparation for the structural steel installation phase later this year.

Site Utilities (part of Athletics and Kinesiology and Art Complex Projects)
Underground piping was installed to provide heating and cooling infrastructure for the new Athletics/Kinesiology, and Art Complex buildings. In addition, new conduit and communications pathways provided a necessary upgrade to the college’s infrastructure and will ensure college technology and all other utility services can be maintained without disruption during the first phase of the Athletics and Kinesiology demolition, which is now complete.

The communication and water infrastructure has been completed. The electrical and sewer upgrades are now also complete. The heating and cooling piping scope hit some unforeseen underground conditions, requiring an unexpected pipe redesign, but is now complete as well. The final phase will be the completion of the switchgear connections which should happen before the end of October.

Note: Impact to the flow of foot traffic in this area continues. Alternate routes are clearly communicated at all times. Please watch for updates.

UPDATE: January 28, 2020

This new complex will bring all DVC art programs back together under one roof in the northeast corner of campus between the Performing Arts Center (PAC) and the Athletics and Kinesiology buildings. The storage warehouse demolition, which was necessary to make room for the new complex, has been completed.

The main art project is under final review of construction drawings prior to final approvals. The contractor prequalification process is underway and if all goes as planned, the project will go out to bid in February and break ground in April or May.

In addition, new conduit and communications pathways will upgrade the college’s infrastructure and ensure college technology and all other utility services can be maintained without disruption during the first phase of the Athletics and Kinesiology demolition.

The communication and water infrastructure has been completed. The electrical and sewer upgrades are in progress and scheduled to be completed in February. The heating and cooling piping project will extend into April due to unforeseen underground conditions, which required an unexpected pipe redesign. The areas north and east of the gym will have metal plates covering trenches pending completion.

UPDATE: October 3, 2019

Construction plans are currently with the Division of the State Architect (DSA) and the first round of comments are due in October. Majority of user group meetings wrapped up prior to project submittal to DSA and final page turn meetings with various building users will be scheduled this fall.

The underground piping and electrical system upgrades project is well under way and the contractor staging area (see below) is still occupying the space of the former warehouse, as this project continues.

Note: Please observe all signage and be attentive to changing conditions when walking near any construction work.

UPDATE: May 20, 2019

To make room for the new complex, the storage warehouse that was on the east side of campus near the bus circle has been removed.

The contractor performing the underground piping and electrical system upgrades project (see below) is currently occupying the demolished warehouse site.

Note: Please observe all signage and be attentive to changing conditions when walking near any construction work.

UPDATE: January 20, 2019

Storage Warehouse Removal

To make room for the new complex, the storage warehouse (east side of campus near the bus circle) needs to be removed.

The contract for the removal work was awarded in December. Fences have already gone up and work has started. It is expected that the removal will be complete by mid spring term. Some minor hazardous material abatement is necessary prior to demolition of the building. As with all projects, only contractors and authorized personnel are

allowed inside the fenced area.

Underground piping and electrical system upgrade project

The heating and cooling for the new PE/K and Art Complexes will require underground piping. New conduit for telephone and internet wiring are also being installed to upgrade the college’s communications infrastructure. This will ensure college technology and other utility services can be maintained without disruption during the first phase of the Physical Education/Kinesiology demolition.

Bids for this work were opened and the contract was awarded in December. The contractor will occupy the site starting in late February.

Note: This work will impact the flow of foot traffic in this area. Alternate routes will be clearly communicated at all times. Please watch for updates.

UPDATE: November 2018

The design development phase concluded in July and has moved into the construction design phase.

  • The Art Building user groups, the Project Steering Committee (PSC) and the Executive Steering Committee (ESC) reviewed the updated design and estimates over this past summer and again in early October.
  • The first phase of the Art Complex construction project is the demolition of the old warehouse between PAC and Horticulture. All stakeholders are currently actively involved in relocating the contents of the warehouse to other locations. The demolition is being bid in a separate process with bids open in November and the project starting in January 2019.
  • The Art Complex building is on schedule for construction documents submittal to the Division of the State Architect (DSA) in January/February 2019 and construction is scheduled to begin late fall 2019.

Total Project Budget: $39M

Timeline: 45% progress toward ground breaking

UPDATE: June 2018

User group meetings continued this term with significant feedback that informed the continued design on this project. We are expecting to complete the design development phase by the end of June.

The project Steering Committee reviewed the current plans and considered small changes to the gallery design to provide for more flexible academic spaces. Soils remediation work is moving forward with additional analysis by the geotechnical engineers. Some level of remediation is still expected to be part of this project. Final cost will be reviewed over summer.

Current approximate cost: $39 M

Timeline: 35% progress toward ground-breaking

UPDATE: February 2018

Changes from the original concept include a shift of three general classrooms from the art complex to the academic complex for broader and more flexible use. Soils remediation work may also be necessary. This work will need to be evaluated and then included in the final cost.

Current approximate cost: $39 M

Timeline: 30-35% progress toward ground-breaking
