Athletics and Kinesiology Complex

New construction/renovation – Pleasant Hill

The athletic facilities at the DVC Pleasant Hill campus are among the oldest and most well-used buildings on campus.New kinesiology and athletics faculty offices, classrooms, and a training room/lab

Replacement and/or renovation of these facilities has been long overdue. This program will upgrade our facilities to reflect the excellence and diversity of our 17 men's and women's athletics programs.

The vision of this project is to create a new “fieldhouse” and adjoining facility that will include an equipment room, team meeting rooms, locker rooms (for 17 sports plus general use), kinesiology and athletics faculty offices, classrooms, and a training room/lab. In addition to the new construction, there will be renovations to the pool and gym.

pool renovations

The areas impacted by this project will be the men’s and women’s locker rooms (one will be torn down and the other will have major renovations), the existing academic office building will also be torn down, and the portables currently in use by the program will be removed from their current locations.

Construction timelines and updates:

UPDATE: October 21,  2020

This project includes construction of a new field house, office building, locker room buildings, gym, and pool renovation. The new complex will also offer student athletes plenty of indoor and outdoor gathering spaces.

The former Kinesiology office building and the stadium concession stand are now gone! Demolition of that work was completed during the summer.

This project was combined with the Art Complex project when it went out for bid amid the Covid-19 pandemic onset in April. The project successfully broke ground in July. Early site utilities phase construction has been completed including the central plant underground piping and electrical system upgrades. Current construction activities include footings excavation and rebar installation at the faculty office building site. The new field house footings are also in progress. The next big milestone this term will include beginning of the structural steel installation.

UPDATE: October 3,  2019

Things are starting to happen on the Athletics and Kinesiology Complex project! DSA final approvals are in progress and final review is expected in October or November.

The move from the Kinesiology Office Building to temporary swing space is rescheduled for the first half of October and the Kinesiology dean and faculty offices occupants will relocate to a temporary mobile space adjacent to the soccer field.

Abatement and demolition of the current kinesiology offices and the stadium concessions and restrooms is targeted for an October/early November start. The contract for this work has been awarded and preconstruction meetings are scheduled.

Underground piping and electrical system upgrade project continues

New underground piping will provide heating and cooling infrastructure for the new Athletic and Kinesiology Complex and the Art Complex. In addition, new conduit and communications pathways are being installed to increase college technology infrastructure and to provide alternative services so the first phase of Athletics demolition can be performed without disruption to college utilities. This project is on schedule and proceeding across the lower part of the campus.

Note: Impact to the flow of foot traffic in this area continues. Alternate routes are clearly communicated at all times. Please watch for updates.

Underground piping and electrical system upgrade project

Underground piping will provide heating and cooling infrastructure for the new Athletic and Kinesiology Complex and the Art Complex. In addition, new conduit and communications pathways are being installed to increase college technology infrastructure and to provide alternative services so the first phase of Athletics demolition can be performed without disruption to college utilities.

The contractor for this work mobilized in March and has worked on the first of several joint trenching and underground piping activities near the Music Building and Viking Field. This work is expected to continue through most of 2019.

Note: This work continues to impact the flow of foot traffic in this area. Alternate routes will be clearly communicated at all times. Please watch for updates.

Storage Warehouse Removal

To make room for the new complex, the storage warehouse (east side of campus near the bus circle) needs to be removed.

The contract for the removal work was awarded in December. Fences have already gone up and work has started. It is expected that the removal will be complete by mid spring term. Some minor hazardous material abatement is necessary prior to demolition of the building. As with all

projects, only contractors and authorized personnel are allowed inside the fenced area.

Underground piping and electrical system upgrade project

The heating and cooling for the new PE/K and Art Complexes will require underground piping. New conduit for telephone and internet wiring are also being installed to upgrade the college’s communications infrastructure. This will ensure college technology and other utility services can be maintained without disruption during the first phase of the Physical Education/Kinesiology demolition.

Bids for this work were opened and the contract was awarded in December. The contractor will occupy the site starting in late February.

Note: This work will impact the flow of foot traffic in this area. Alternate routes will be clearly communicated at all times. Please watch for updates.

 UPDATE: November 15, 2018

The design development drawings were reviewed by the Executive Steering Committee (ESC) in July 2018 and approval was given to move forward with construction design. The project is currently half-way through the construction design phase.

  • The Project Steering Committee (PSC) reviewed the design progress in September and in early October the ESC reviewed the construction drawings progress and updated estimates.
  •  The project is on track for submittal to the Division of the State Architect (DSA) in December 2018 and construction is scheduled to begin in early fall 2019.

Details are still being worked out to arrange for necessary swing space needed by summer 2019. This will likely require bringing in onsite portable units to house displaced faculty and staff.

Total Project Budget: $41M

Timeline: 50% progress toward ground breaking

UPDATE: June 2018

Project design is currently in final stages of development. It is on schedule for the agency review and submittal by the end of this year. We are exploring was to accelerate some of the construction, and are therefore looking at the viability of starting the pool renovation over winter break and gym renovation mid-spring 2019.

Final schedule for these incremental projects will be finalized over summer at the conclusion of discussions regarding swing space and department impacts.

Current approximate cost: $40 M

Timeline: 35% progress toward ground-breaking

UPDATE: February 2018

The original scope of this project was driven by the decline in activity course enrollments, but did not take sufficient account of the requirements for maintaining our 17 team sports. In addition, portable classrooms were mistakenly overlooked in the original scope. There was an increase in square footage due to the necessary alignment with the new classroom design standards, and major cracks were discovered in the pool resulting in an unanticipated additional cost of the pool renovation. Finally, the condition of one of the existing buildings means that planned renovation is not an option, and new construction will be needed to replace at least a part of it.  A reconsideration of these needs added to the cost of the project over the original estimates.

Current approximate cost: $40 M

Timeline: 30-35% progress toward ground-breaking
