“I had been working as an aesthetician in 2020, and then it shut down due to the pandemic. I freaked out, wondering, ‘what was I going to do? What skills did I have?’ It was a very scary time for the personal care industry,” said Solana Rehne.

Like many of his colleagues, Laury Fischer never expected to teach his classes online, but after nearly five decades as an educator, the Diablo Valley College professor was determined to learn how to do so in a world changed by the coronavirus pandemic.

While many colleges are focused on how to move classes online, Diablo Valley College is well ahead of the curve. “DVC has been offering online classes for a long time. Our initial focus was on figuring out how to place a class online. But after much success, we are now focused on the quality of online education. We are also ensuring that we increase equity, especially for underserved populations,” said Anne Kingsley, the distance education coordinator for DVC.

The Contra Costa Community College District was awarded nearly $1.5 million in grants for distance education. Of this total amount, Diablo Valley College received $500,000.
