DVC's Controlled Environmental Growth (HORT-151) Featured on KRON4

DVC's horticulture class, Controlled Environmental Growth (HORT151), was featured on KRON4 in a segment on "Higher Education: How Bay Area schools prepare students for the cannabis industry." Watch as students are instructed in how to use popular marijuana growing methods such as hydroponics and aquaponics. Due to DVC being a drug free campus, the students are growing microgreens and basil however, not marijuana.
Students taking HORT 151 don't handle cannabis plants on campus. They learn to measure and extract medicinal compounds from plants like St. John's Wort and Ginseng. These skills can be transferred to the extractive cannabis industry. Students learn tissue culture propagation, techniques widely used in plant production.
“There is going to be an increase in jobs and it’s a multibillion dollar industry,” said the Dean of Sciences at DVC, Joe Gorga. “It's going to pay employees a good living wage in the Bay Area and we need to meet able to make sure that we're providing our students those opportunities.”
