Dr. John Freytag honored as CCCCD Teacher of the Year
May 1, 2017
Dr. John Freytag, DVC department chair for biological sciences and oceanography lead instructor, has been chosen as the Contra Costa Community College District’s honoree for Teacher of the Year. This award is part of the Contra Costa County Office of Education’s participation in the statewide Teacher of the Year (TOY) program.
Diablo Valley College is proud to count such a dedicated teacher among our faculty. He is highly regarded among students, and works diligently to make marine science accessible, relevant, and relatable for all his students. His famed (and free!) field trips aboard a 90-foot long research vessel give his students an unforgettable learning experience. If you are lucky enough to take his marine biology class in the spring, you may find yourself digging for gaper clams and sharing in a clam chowder potluck. Students repeatedly say his Oceanography class was not only very enjoyable, but also taught them that science does not have to be scary. We applaud Dr. Freytag for the confidence and direction he gives each of his students.
Dr. Freytag has played an important role at DVC for the past 12 years and has been an exemplary leader in college governance. He served on the Academic Senate Council for many years, and is currently serving as Academic Senate Vice President and co-chair of College Council, the main college wide governance body. He is widely known for his commitment to student equity, excellence, and learning.
Join us in congratulating Dr. John Freytag on this well-deserved honor!
