DVC swimmers win state title

The DVC men's swim team won the state title at Saddleback College last week, and team coach Rick Millington was named Men's Coach of the Year. DVC's Kim Bierwirth was named Female Swimmer of the Year, and the women's swim team finished fourth in the state.

There's lots of other good news in DVC athletics as well.

DVC women's tennis player Alexandra Iova-Negoescu has qualified for the state championships in Southern California.

Men's and women's track and field , led by runner Colin Bauer, has a good chance to qualify 7-10 athletes to the state championships.

The DVC Baseball team is the #10 seed in the Nor-Cal playoffs, after losing a heartbreaker 9-8 in 12 innings on the last day of Big Eight competition and falling from 1st to 3rd place in the process. They will play at Solano College (Bay Valley Champs) in a best of three series.

Angela Goularte, an ex-Chabot and St. Mary's College player who has been the head softball coach at Contra Costa College for the past two years, will take over as head coach of the Vikings softball team. She replaces Gene Vigil, who resigned after one season after taking over for Theresa Flores-Lowry, who retired from coaching.

Mike Darr has been hired as DVC's full-time football coach. He was the head coach this past year (part-time), led the Vikings to an appearance in the Bulldog Bowl, and has been instrumental in the team's success for the past four years.

Next fall DVC's Mike Chisar becomes president of the statewide Athletic Trainer's Association through the CCCAA/COA.

Proving again that the fittest PE instructors are females, part-time instructor Shelly Pierson recently was the women's overall division winner in the tough and local Brickyard Race; and Lisa Ward finished in the Top 5 in the nation in five different events at the Master's Swimming National Championships in Austin, Texas.
