This year's conference took place on Saturday, October 18 and over 300 students attended. Hosted and coordinated by Catherine Franco, DVC's Transfer Center Coordinator, this conference was started in 2003 to provide students with information about transfer in an intensive, half-day format. The conference is provided free of charge, thanks to the exceptional financial and logistical support provided by the International Education Center (IEC), DVC's International Students Admissions and Services, Financial Aid, Disability Support Services, the Office of Student Life and EOPS. Equally important in making this event a reality are the presenters and materials provided by DVC, UC, CSU and local private colleges, all at no charge.
This year's conference featured keynote speaker Steven Handel, Senior Director of the National Office of Community College Initiatives for the College Board. The day's program included panels of 4-year institution representatives, DVC alumni, and other program-specific experts. Breakout sessions focused on how to complete college applications, how to seek and obtain funding for college, transfer information for international students and students with disabilities, and basic transfer planning for newer students. 97 percent of attendees reported that they learned more about the transfer process. We also asked students to share the most useful thing they learned at the conference; responses included "utilize the Student Services available" and "Never give up. I can do it."
