The College Now program gives students an opportunity to achieve both high school and college academic success, to explore and pursue career aspirations, and to prepare themselves for future college experiences in a supportive, academically-challenging environment, on a college campus. College Now serves students whose needs are not being met by the comprehensive high school. If you are looking for the College Now Application Materials and Contact, visit the MDUSD program page.
Students take both high school and college courses each semester. The high school courses satisfy high school graduation requirements and adhere to the California State Standards and MDUSD approved curriculum. Students take English, Social Studies, and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) courses from MDUSD instructors. AVID is a course designed to guide students in the development of strong academic habits and study skills that will aid them in their college level courses. These high school level courses are taught by MDUSD instructors on DVC's campus.
College Now students also complete 2-4 college classes per term. These courses are chosen with the guidance of both the MDUSD counselor and the DVC counselor to ensure students are meeting high school graduation requirements and A-G requirements, while at the same time taking courses aligned with their educational goals.
Academic and career advising is a major component of the program. MDUSD instructors and counselors, working closely with DVC staff members, help students adjust to a college environment and outline career and educational plans. DVC offers a variety of services – all available to College Now students. Additionally, College Now students are encouraged and supported in becoming more involved in DVC extra-curricular activities.
