This course is a survey of the United States from the perspective of African Americans, comparing the African experience with the experiences of Europeans, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Hispanics. Part of the course will be devoted to the U.S. government and the Constitution, the California government and Constitution, and other constitutional models for comparison and contrast. The course will examine the early African presence in America, the origins of the slave trade, and explore political, economic, demographic and cultural influences shaping African American life and culture prior to 1865.
