| Critical reasoning in sociology is a process of questioning, analyzing and evaluating oral and written ideas, concepts, and interpretations of the political, economic and social issues and patterns found in human societies. This process will include an introduction to the principles of logic, the structure of language, the scientific method, and prevailing theoretical models in sociology. Specific writing skills will be developed through a series of increasingly complex analytical essays and through instruction in metaphor, analogy, comparing and contrasting, the nature of evidence, as well as essay structure and expression. The goal is for students to learn how to identify sociological viewpoints, to gather and analyze sociological information, to recognize sociological relationships and patterns, and to see the relevancy of sociological insights and theories as a background for understanding current events and issues.
