This course is a survey, of United States history (pre-colonial-1877) emphasizing women's life experiences within the context of larger historical changes. The course will examine the commonalties of women's experience based on their gender and the differences among women based on their race, ethnicity, class, and region. The course will explore how women fostered and were affected by social, political, economic, and cultural transformations. The course will consider the impact of the U.S. and California Constitutions and the activities of federal, state, and local governments on the experience of women.
