How to calculate your GPA

What is GPA?

GPA stands for grade point average.

How is GPA calculated?

Courses are given a letter or P/NP grade. (See catalog for information about P/NP.) P/NP courses do not affect your GPA.

Letter grades have the following point value: Letter grade point value
A 4
B 3
C 2
D 1
F 0

Each course is assigned a number of units – ex. English 122 is a 3-unit course.

The number of units is multiplied by the number of points.

Example:

Course Units Points Grade Grade points (Units * Points)
English 122 3 3 B 9 (3x3)
Psych 122 3 4 A 12 (3x4)
BioSc 102 (4) 4 CR 0
History 120 3 0 F 0 (3x0)
Health Sc 124 3 3 D 3 (3x1)
PE 106 1 1 A 4 (1x4)
TOTAL 13 14 28 2.154 (28/13)

Overall GPA  ~  28 (graded points) ÷ 13 (graded units) = 2.154
