Dear DVC Community,
On Saturday, January 31, 2009, the Financial Aid Office hosted its 5th annual Cash for College Workshop at DVC. This event brought forth over 350 participants, including 231 college and high school students, seeking assistance and information about financial aid and DVC. Student Services, including the Transfer Center, Career & Employment Services, EOPS, Student Life, Disability Support Services, Counseling, Admissions, and Student Ambassadors were present with representatives to inform participants about DVC. The East Bay Consortium provided many financial aid experts to also assist our office in this event. Also present were representatives from CSU East Bay, St. Mary's College, and EdFund to help us in assisting students and families with their financial aid questions.
This year's event allowed participants to get hands-on assistance in the Cafeteria, listen to a FAFSA presentation every hour, get their taxes completed for free, and submit their FAFSAs online in our Student Services Computer Lab. Allowing participants to chose which services they would like to take advantage of worked to the benefit of our volunteers and to our students. They were able to get what they wanted to accomplish completed before leaving the workshop.
Though DVC's Cash for College has passed, the Financial Aid Office has a few more financial aid workshops they are co-coordinating including follow-up Cash for College events at Mt. Diablo and Ygnancio Valley high schools and a Cash For Your Classes workshop at our San Ramon Campus on Saturday, February 21st. Both the Cash for College at Mt. Diablo and Ygnacio Valley high schools were successes turning out over 200 students and parents at the events. The follow-ups scheduled for February 5th and 11th at Mt. Diablo and Ygnacio Valley, respectively, will hopefully turn out more students to complete their financial aid files.
The Cash for College campaign will end at the end of this month with over 400 workshops completed throughout the state of California. It has been a true pleasure for the Financial Aid Office to continue to serve the community for the 6th year in a row with such a wonderful program. We are also very humbled by the many departments and people who have supported our efforts, including all the faculty who responded and invited us to make presentations in their classes about financial aid and the deadlines. Your willingness to provide crucial information to all our students are very appreciated. Thank you!
