DVC's Mary Ann Irwin has been awarded the Eisenstein-DeLacy Prize for the best published article by an NCIS member, awarded by the National Coalition of Independent Scholars.
Irwin’s winning journal article was “Sex, War, and Community Service: The Battle for San Francisco’s Jewish Community Center.” The article was published in the special “Gender and the City” edition of Frontiers: A Journal of Women Studies, v. 32, Issue I, May 2011.
Irwin has been a part-time professor of history at Diablo Valley College since the summer of 1996.
“Writing is such a solitary practice,” she said. “An award like this confirms that I can be part of the academic community, even as an adjunct.” According to its website, NCIS welcomes “contingent faculty, part-time faculty, high school teachers, retirees, and any others active in research and scholarship.”
